Educational Goals
- To develop an advanced level of confidence in the indications, limitations, and complications of diagnostic cardiac catheterization and peripheral vascular angiography procedures.
- To obtain an advanced level of knowledge in the interpretation of hemodynamic and arteriographic data.
- To gain an advanced level of knowledge in the interpreting and analyzing coronary arteriographic and peripheral vascular angiographic data in regards to image processing and quality.
- To gain an advanced level of understanding of the technical aspects of cardiac and peripheral vascular catheterization, including: the techniques of femoral venous and arterial puncture, brachial and radial artery puncture, and internal jugular vein puncture approaches to the performance of diagnostic right and left cardiac catheterization and peripheral angiography
- To gain an advanced level of proficiency in shunt detection, cardiac output determination, pressure waveform, recording and analysis.
- To gain an advanced level of understanding of cardiovascular pathophysiology and pathology.
- To obtain an advanced level of confidence in the experience of using cardiac catheterization and peripheral vascular data to manage patients with complex cardiovascular disease processes in regards to clinical decision-making.
- To obtain an advanced level of understanding in the selection of patients for percutaneous revascularization techniques.
- To gain an advanced level of knowledge in the use of appropriate diagnostic catheters for peripheral vascular angiography.
- To obtain an advanced level of understanding and competence in the performance of specialized percutaneous revascularization procedures, including: percutaneous balloon angioplasty, cutting balloon angioplasty, bare metal and drug-eluting stent placement, endovascular ultrasound, directional and rotational atherectomy, rheolytic thrombectomy, balloon valvolplasty, intravascular brachytherapy, and other upcoming newer technologies.
- To develop clinical or basic research through independent literature review, preparation of a grant-in -aid for peer-review, developing and implementing one or more research studies including active recruitment in ongoing large scale multi-centered and multinational studies, analyzing data, preparing data for abstract submission for peer-review, and preparing full manuscripts for peer-review. This will be performed under the supervision of a mentor from the cardiac catheterization laboratory.
